Biography
Jonas Clarke grew up as an only child in a small farming community in rural Iowa, where he was known as an exceptionally bright if somewhat solemn youth who mostly kept to himself. His was a typical Midwestern community where people grew up, got married, and settled down just as their parents had done before them. Many probably would have considered it idyllic, but not Jonas Clarke. His keen intellect and insatiable curiosity found little of interest in Small Town, U.S.A. He didn't spend much time actively thinking about leaving, even during his adolescence. Rather, he always knew on some instinctual level that he would, because he simply didn't belong there. The other townsfolk, including his classmates, seemed to share that understanding. When he graduated high school, no one was particularly surprised when he quietly left town and never looked back.
He attended Iowa State University, where he dual majored in philosophy and history. College provided him with a comfortable, regimented, and encapsulated existence surrounded by people who shared his thirst for learning, and he was happy there. He excelled in the classroom, easily garnering high praise and enthusiastic recommendations from his professors. He didn't really have a career in mind for himself, but rather enjoyed learning for its own sake. His studies presented him with ample opportunities to ponder life's mysteries and discover its truths, and that suited him just fine. He eventually earned a teaching assistantship and pursued his master's degree in English Literature. During grad school, he managed to impress a visitor from the University of Rhode Island while presenting a paper at a conference. A conversation over dinner turned into a scholarship offer, which led to a promising academic career.
Jonas joined the the faculty at URI and quickly become one of its shining stars. His philosophical background gave him a unique approach to literary criticism among his peers, and his old world charm and genuine enthusiasm for his subject made his classes engaging and enjoyable for his students. He passed the next twenty years in happiness, enjoying the quiet and comfortable life of an academician. As the big 5-0 began to loom on the horizon, he decided to try his hand at getting a book published. He took a sabbatical and flew to England, where an acquaintance of his from the University of Oxford had told him about a cottage that he owned outside of Betws-y-Coed in Wales where Clarke could stay for the asking while he wrote. He traveled to Wales, settled into the cottage, and began to explore both the countryside and the history and folklore of the area between bouts of writing. He passed the spring and summer in Betws-y-Coed and never thought of leaving.
On a late summer's day after a particularly enjoyable walk down the blacktop south of the Conway Falls, he encountered a curious sight. There was a weathered sign situated at the entrance of a rutted dirt path leading off of the blacktop and into the forest that read, simply: THE LADY'S LAKE. Jonas was intrigued, and more than a little amused. He followed the trail through a corridor of tall trees and soon found himself in a forested glen. It was there that he encountered the Lady. She showed him visions of a bleak and terrible future, where the forces of evil had crushed the last vestiges of anything good in the world. She told him of the Eternal Conflict between light and darkness, as old as time and newly rekindled with the bestowal of the power of gods upon mortal men and women. She also showed him what he might become, granting him a glimpse of the good he might do and the lives he might save as her champion.
Sensing that he had found his destiny, he knelt before her and committed himself forever to her service, and she summoned forth a massive sword from the depths of the water. Dyrnwyn was one of the 13 legendary Treasures of Britain, and had done much to shape the island's history. It irrevocably bound itself to him when Jonas took it in his hands, filling him with strength and purpose while making him feel complete in ways that he hadn't understood that he wasn't. The man who emerged from the glen of Brocéliande that night was not the same as the one who had entered. He was a tall, powerful, and taciturn warrior possessed of the martial wisdom of those who had previously borne his fabled blade.
Clarke returned to Rhode Island and resigned his tenure, setting out for Paragon City. The Lady had warned him that this place had become the apex of the Eternal Conflict, and bade him to carry her sword boldly into battle against the evil forces that he would find there. He registered with the PPD as a licensed hero, calling himself The People's Paladin. His efforts have been largely successful, but he has come to recognize that he cannot hold back the tide on his own. His search for allies has led him to the offices of the Dawn Patrol. As his sword is a relic of British antiquity and his values align closely with theirs, he feels that this particular cadre of heroes might be the best fit for him.
