First off, welcome to the Dawn Patrol! We’re excited that you’ve decided to join our family and role play with us! Please
read over the following guidelines we have here so as to help you have as rewarding and fun role play experience as possible.
Terminology:
IC: In character
OOC: Out of Character
PM: Private Message
RL: Real Life
ERP: Erotic Role Play
Meta: Meta-gaming
Our roleplay rules are pretty simple and basic, because one of the main reasons we are here is to roleplay. The simple gist of
it is this... Use emotes when possible, be realistic (as you can for this genre) and don't be a jerk.
That said, the modern world we live in (the real one, not this one) requires me to get into a bit more detail about the rules.
Please do read them as you will be held to them while role playing as a member of the Dawn Patrol.
So, lets establish what is “Canon/Official” rp and what is considered complimentary/additional.
Forum SG Role play/stories: Forum role play story lines are what is considered the “Canon/Official” Dawn Patrol roleplay. These
storylines are something that are discussed over by the Officer Echelon after the idea is brought forward by a member, to establish
some guidelines, and then opened for posting on the Forum. We try to keep from placing too many limitations on what people can or can’t
say in a post, but in times that there are areas that will require prior approval to posting, that will be noted in the thread of that story line.
This doesn’t mean that any in-game role play is not factored in or not “legitimate” role play. Quite the contrary. In-game role play is what we
consider complimentary/additions to the official story and can even be worked into the official story in form of your forum posts. In fact, there
will be times that we do coordinate having some in-game events to coincide with the forum role play.
Also be aware that participating in forum or in-game role play is your choice. If you’re not a writer, or not a role player, that’s absolutely
fine. The Dawn Patrol does not require you to be a role player. All we ask is if you come upon a scene taking place between some of the other
member’s in-game, that you respect them and do not disrupt their role play.
Personal role play/stories: Now let’s touch on personal forum role play stories. Several people post up stories separate from the group
stories to advance each of their characters in other areas of their “life” There are two types of these that you will see on the forum. Open and closed
stories. You will be able to tell the difference by the title of the story as it will look like this.
Freedom Corps Intel Dispatch #3345631 ((OPEN))
If a story has open on it, that means the creator invites others who would like to participate in their personal story. If it has closed at the end,
that means only the “owner” of the thread will be posting in it. Both types of stories should have threads started for them in the Story planning/Development
section of the forum. This is done so that if it is an open story, the “owner” of the thread can place some guidelines/restrictions on what others can
or cannot post or for others to show their appreciation for the story. On closed story, its only so others can comment on it showing their appreciation
of how it reads.
Use of language/adult situations in a forum story:
Please remember that some members, or even people visiting the forums to read the stories, may be minors/teenagers. Accordingly, you should try to keep
adult-type situations/language/behavior to a minimum and post ((ADULT)) in your title at the end, along with a more comprehensive disclaimer at the top
of the story.
For example: ((CONTENT WARNING: Contains swearing, mild to medium violence, and some sexual situations))
Swearing is okay, but it doesn’t need to be every other word, or swearing just for the sake of swearing.
As far as violence goes, obviously, being a game of Heroes and Villains fighting each other, there may be some violence in stories, and that’s to be
expected. However, there is no need for excessive/overly graphic violence.
The same goes for romantic/sexual situations. Yes, most of us are adults here. But, there is no need to go into graphic detail as far as sex in a forum
story. A good rule of thumb is that if clothes are starting to come off, then it’s a good idea to fade to black that part of the story. If suddenly
we’re reading something that looks like its straight out of a porno, it will be deleted.
Using other people’s characters: When writing up a story, you need to use some caution in using characters belonging to other members in the
group. ALWAYS contact the member privately first and get their permission. If that person says yes, once you have a story ready to post, you should
get the other person to look it over and sign off on how their character was used in your story. This is why at the start of some posts; you will see
an OOC statement saying “((Looked over and approved by ‘insert Hero name here’))”
If a person says to you “No, I prefer that my character not be involved in your story” then please respect their wishes, do not argue with them, or
even ask them why. This is to avoid having disputes between members. Their reason may not be anything personal against you, but they have the right
to decide whether or not they tell you why they do or don’t want their character in your story. If they don’t want to tell you why, its best to simply
say “Thanks for your time and consideration” and move on with your story in another way.
Other guidelines
IC vs. OOC: All attempts should be made to keep OOC chat out of local and SG chat channels when possible. We provide a DP OOC channel
for us to just chat in. Local and SG should be reserved for IC comments only. It is acceptable to use ((BRB)) or ((Back)) in local if you have to step
away from a scene or a mission for a moment. All other OOC chat should be kept to the appropriate channel. You can say wb or adjust the post order as
needed out of local.
Emoting: Roleplay should be conducted with emotes when possible or appropriate. (done by using /e in local) Emotes should include something the
other player(s) can react to such as an action or statement. Other players can not react to your thoughts, so those thoughts have no place in emotes.
Spoken words should be put in quotes to clarify what is spoken and what is not.
No Meta-gaming. You might ask, what is meta-gaming? Let’s look at a definition of it.
Metagaming: is a term used in role playing games, which describes a player's use of real-life knowledge concerning the state of the game to
determine their character’s actions, when said character has no relevant knowledge or awareness under the circumstances. This can refer to plot information
in the game such as secrets or events occurring away from the character, as well as facets of the game's mechanics such as abstract statistics or the precise
limits of abilities. Metagaming is an example of "breaking character", as the character is making decisions based on information they couldn't know and thus
would not make in reality.
Now let’s give an example of this. Lady Britania (me) and Crimsonstar OOC’ly design a storyline for the SG to pursue through role play. There are certain
things that we, as the designers of the role play would know, that our characters would have to learn throughout the course of the role play, along with
everyone else. If one of us were to use that information before such time as we would legitimately learn in an IC environment, OR if we were to IC’ly give
away information about the situation on one of our alts (that the alt wouldn’t know about), that would be an example of meta-gaming.
Respect/Harassment: Respect your fellow players/typists here. A disrespectful character IC is permitted... A disrespectful typist is not.
Under no circumstances will any of the following things be allowed here: Harassment/disrespect toward members or non-member players OOC’ly, Racism and hate
crime RP (or OOC behavior of such), Passive aggressive bullying through thought emotes which typists cannot react to IC’ly.
Public role play vs. Private role play/ERP: We will not discourage ERP from happening in-game. However, there will be some limits on it.
Keep it private. No ERP in local, SG, or DP OOC chats. Keep it to PM’s between the two of you or take it to a team (if it’s just the two participants) or
private chat channel. While we respect your right to ERP, we also respect the rights of others that are not interested in seeing that type of role play.
Along with the fact that there might be minors/teenagers playing as characters as well.
Along with this goes where you might be engaging in this type of behavior at. It might be kind of awkward if you’re engaged in ERP in a public area like
the cafeteria and three people walk in. How do you explain that the two of you aren’t talking? Or not wanting to engage in rp with the others in local?
The easiest way to solve this is to say that all public areas of the base are off-limits to ERP. So basically, if you’re going to engage in such in the
base, place both your characters in one of the personal quarters.
Obviously the quarters don’t have any doors on them, but it gives anyone coming into the central area of the quarters the opportunity to come up and “Knock”
on your quarters door and gives you a good way to IC’ly say that you’re unavailable.
The most important thing about role play is to have fun! It sounds cliché, but it's true. We want you to enjoy your time with us and enjoy creating stories, and memories
with us. Now get out there and start role playing!
