To say that Sean Alexander Morrison had an unusual childhood would be an understatement. What can you expect when you’re the son of two superheroes? Sean was born on the December 23rd, 1988, in Campbeltown, Scotland. However, his story begins 24 years after his birth – in the latter half of 2012.
Sean’s parents – Highland Guard and Highland Dawn – were meeting with Mender Ramiel in Ouroboros. He had come to rely on them for the retrieval of ancient artifacts. The Mender was describing one such artifact to them when, without warning, it was as if the universe “blinked.” Reality ceased to exist for a fraction of a second, then reformed. The event sent ripples through all timelines in all realities. Tremors were immediately felt on Ouroboros. Ramiel urged his visitors to exit through a nearby portal. As they approached the gateway, it began to flicker. Highland Guard took his wife’s hand and they dove into the waning light. They could hear Ramiel’s voice calling behind them.
“Remain near the exit point! We will find you as soon as possible!”
The heroes found themselves laying on a low, grassy hillside overlooking a small lake. The air was clear and cool, and the sun was rising over the crest of the hill. The portal was nowhere to be seen. They sat for several minutes, taking in their surroundings. There was rolling farmland beyond the lake to the west, and forest to the north and south. Highland Guard sniffed the air and pressed a hand against the ground. Smiling at his wife, the swordsman whispered, “Dawn, my Love… we’re in Scotland.”
They stood and began walking up the hill when the portal flashed into existence. It wavered – seemingly unstable. A moment later, Mender Ramiel stepped through the glowing rift in space. He waved the heroes over as he unslung a heavy-looking leather satchel from his shoulder.
“My friends!” called Ramiel, smiling. “It’s good to see you well. We have already started repairs to the damaged stream of time.”
“But we’ve been here for less than an hour,” Highland Dawn exclaimed.
“Such are the fractures in time,” the Mender responded. “The timelines are out of sync. While moments pass here, days have passed in other realities.”
His voice taking a serious tone, Ramiel continued, “Now, I have a request to make of you. I would like you to remain here and stand watch over the area around the portal until stability has been restored to the timeline. It connects this reality with a myriad of others, and there are surely beings that would use it to launch an invasion.”
The Mender paused and looked down at the ground - then into the faces of the heroes.
“You MUST remain here for, sadly, you may never return to Paragon City. Not only has the portal deposited you in another part of the globe - you have also stepped back in time – 25 years into your past.”
Highland Dawn – obviously shaken – took her husband’s arm for support. “There’s no chance of us over returning? Can we not return with you through the portal?” Highland Guard asked. Raising a hand, Ramiel explained, “Not with the timeline in its current state. We fear that, if you were to return there in this time, it may cause another temporal cataclysm like the one we just experienced. Know that we will continue to repair the damage and also attempt to find the answer to getting you safely to your appropriate time.”
Pointing to the leather satchel, Ramiel continued, “In the meantime, use this currency to acquire the land surrounding this location. There should be more than enough. You will find an empty house just over the hill to the south.”
“Think of it as an early retirement,” their friend said, smiling. “I’ll return from time to time and tell you of our progress. Be vigilant, and the best of luck to you both.”
Taking his wife in his arms, Highland Guard whispered, “Are you ready for another adventure, Love? Retirement… in 1987.”
