Erik picked up his bride and kissed her gently, then took off, cradling her in his arms. "Let's go home, Mrs. Meier."
She giggled and wrapped her arms around the back of his neck, burying her face in his chest. "Alright, husband."
He flew her home that way, the two of them wrapped up in the joy and love they felt for one another. As they reached the balcony of the penthouse, Erik stopped suddenly, staring at the door.
It stood open.
Erik set Sunny down gently on the patio, then turned to the door.
"You don't think..." Sunny trailed off.
Erik nodded sharply. "Sid."
"But Dave's got 24-hour watch on this place!" Sunny sounded slightly hysterical.
"Sid's a Nictus, Sunny. And he's got lots of people. Who's to say he doesn't have a few invisibles in his coterie?" Erik's voice sounded dead, leaden, and harsh in the silence on the patio.
Sunny frowned, then squared her shoulders. "Well, let's go see..." She eeled past Erik and strolled into the apartment like it was nothing.
Erik followed, his heavy tread a muffled counterpoint to her catlike one. They went into the kitchen, living room, and dining room. All was as they'd left it. Sunny turned resolutely toward the bedroom. She stepped into the room, then stopped, her jaw dropping in abject horror.
As Erik stopped behind her, he, too, was stunned. "Fuck..."
The couples' cats, a pair of tuxedo shorthairs they'd found living by the dumpster, had been sliced cleanly from throat to tail, and laid almost lovingly on the bed. On the wall, written in what appeared to be blood, were the words, "Congratulations. You're next." Otherwise, the room was as they had left it.
Sunny's mouth worked silently for a long moment, and when she finally spoke, her tones were ice-cold. "This...was just to show us that security is useless...this is..."
Erik nodded silently, reaching for his phone. "We can't stay here any longer."
