Biography
Ahzanique Din'Zahkaraeus (River or Niq for short; Name means 'River of Tomorrow'), born Emily Bacon, is a woman of extensive, hodgepodge, often bizarre influences in a long life of adventure and tragedy, spurred by a fateful opening of the book, 'Hither to Tales of Yonder' as a Beatles-crazed teen in the 60's. This carried her across many decades of 'lives' lived in other worlds, forced to endure the tales to their conclusion before moving on, her the main character.
From childhood-like fairy tales to coming-of-age stories to disturbing chronicles of enslavement, she lived through her teens literally consumed in fantasy worlds of wonder, horror or both. Hero, villain, afflicted, afflicting, she was forced to deal with each role and adapt in order to unlock the next page and turn her life over to whatever new triumph or degradation the twisted book had next for her. Early on she was force-fed a fae potion meant to abort a child, and this was more than was bargained for as it irrevocably changed her appearance and nature.
The stories matured as she did, though often mixed in seriousness. She was a princess here, a mad scientist there, a bouncy college cheerleader here, a pirate there (where she lost her leg and began to have prosthetics afterward). All of it both blurred together into a soup of lost identity. Who she was before all but died and she even forgot her own name. Only survival, a vague hope for an end and an absolution, drove her onward.
Out of a pit of darkness, though, that determination solidified and grew. She adapted, she began to hold onto to something else in the midst of it all. A desire to rise above, and a will that began to imprint upon those pages. On into what would be old age in the real world, she became more and more alive and real than she would have ever been otherwise. She forged who she was in fire and steel and tears, and one day the stories no longer changed page to page. One story, simply, continued.
The adventures of Ahzanique Din'Zahkaraeus! The River of Tomorrow, The Conqueror of Sky and Aether, The Admiral of The Fleet and Captain of The Skyship Everstride! These names she earned, for she crushed the enemies of The Talhazaine Federation, she loved and lost and won again from one dominion of The Seven Skies to the next, to bring freedom and democracy to the peoples under the thumbs of tyrants and oppressors, together with her great crew, the foremost of which was the aether-elementalist Popzennus ‘Frozen Steam’ (nickname Popzy), her friend and comrade through thick and thin.
But the last tyrant was the most terrible, and full of guile. Elrox Emagre, ‘The Clockwork God’, an immortal machine entity that had turned his world into an industrial hellscape.
He baited the long-widowed River with her new love, kidnapped on their wedding day. When the sky-armies went to war in pursuit, into his blighted lands, it became a slog. And a vicious counterstroke was unleashed: The Machine Plague, turning flesh into his willing slaves.
The road was a costly one. Her friend Popzy was mortally wounded, and with a great spell he transferred his soul and consciousness into his machine-arm, which River then took for herself - this synthesis was the birth of a hero, a power the world had scarcely seen, but maybe for Elrox himself. Single-handedly, the battle turned in Talhazaine's favor...
But ultimately the victory was Pyrrhic. She lay dying by the corpse of the giant god after a mortal struggle, burning with his acrid oils, impaled by a hundred wounds, but her so-recently-enslaved-then-freed love would not bear her to die. Casting a spell of her own she gave her life for River, disintegrating into nothing with one last caress of the cheek.
In mourning River returned to their home, and lay in their bed. And she heard the telltale click of the book. In anger, in sudden spite she knocked it off the wall it rested...and unintended, she opened it again. Earth. Back to the beginning, the book once again closed and barred to her. Was that the end, or was this just another tale of craziness to complete? Did it even matter anymore?
She spent some years recovering psychologically, having turned all info into authorities for analysis. They assisted her as best as could be. She found her name and family, though she avoided them. She decided to become a hero, and did so in The Dawn Patrol international scene for years, much of it on peacekeeping and security operations in African nations.
3 months ago she had a health scare as the 'plague' condition had gripped and infected her heart. She spent almost 3 months recovering, hospitalized and then rehabilitating. When she was cleared, she found herself transferred to a more permanent position in Paragon, where she could get the best of medical care and attention. It was a difficult pill to swallow, but she intended to make the most of it. She always did.
>:::Full Background:::<
Personality/Psychological Profile:
River is relatively upbeat, flippant and has pretty much seen it all and a box of chocolates to boot. She doesn't appear to generally take things seriously, instead assuming 'everything is going work out one way or another' and being rather sarcastic about it when it, in fact, does. She likes to be overly-dramatic at times and acts over-the-top without apology. "You'll never get away with this, fiends! The River of Tomorrow and The Dawn Patrol will not be denied the glorious sanctity of The People! Tally Ho!" (all said in an exaggerated British accent)
Despite serious psychological trauma and some issues, she is well-adjusted and stable, especially for someone that is possibly terminal. She has never failed to admit to therapists she 'isn't sure reality is real' due to her experiences, though she admits the 'current world' is 'rather laid back' compared to most, though that wasn't entirely unique. She is diagnosed as having a depersonalization-derealization disorder as well as PTSD. She has perhaps not yet come to grips with the severity of her physical condition as she is blase about it.
