Rebecca Hodges, also known as Clockwork Mistress, stood on the roof of one of the skyscrapers on Talos Island and scanned her surroundings. The war walls were kind of like the sonic fence, except they didn’t kill you if you got close to them, she was fairly sure this one single zone had more people than all of Praetoria City, and even their transit system was more expansive than the CTA. It was true, these people were far more chaotic than the masses in Praetoria, but they were more alive, too. Emperor Cole was wrong. Humans didn’t need to be herded like sheep. As much as she hated to admit it, seeing what it was like here made her think that maybe she should have considered the Resistance more favorably.
Oh, well. This spot should give me the best reception on the police radios. Let’s see what they have for me.
We have several reports of Alphonse of the Warriors in the Galaxy Shipping warehouse, near the Founder’s Falls underpass. Extreme force is authorized.
Hmm… that might be just what I need to introduce myself to this world. Time to go.
As she walked off the edge of the roof, she tapped a macro key on her bracer, and her flight spell activated.
The warehouse appeared empty from the front, but she called up her bots, just in case. There was no way to be certain of what might be waiting in—there! The drones all started shooting at some guy who ran out of a side hall, swinging... A battle axe? Against heavy lasers?
She barely had time to formulate her surprise when the ambusher fell, cut down by four sets of heavy lasers. She continued into the warehouse, searching for this guy who the police considered worthy of an extreme response. More attempted ambushes, and within a very few minutes, she was convinced these “Warriors” were delusional barbarian cosplayers, because they certainly weren’t even as much of a threat as individual adepts. Even when there was more than one in an ambush, she broke them up quickly with a web grenade or a photon grenade. Either way, whether webbed or stunned, they were split enough to make it easy for her bots to cut them down.
Finding Alphonse was so easy it was stupid. Naturally, he had set himself up in the shipping and receiving area, with a couple beefcake guards who looked as if they’d be just as comfortable guarding Bobcat.
Heh. Just the way she likes them. Big, muscular, and dumb as a post. Not my type at all. I want a—oh! He’s going to throw things at me? This should last more than a minute or two.
The fight with Alphonse lasted almost a full minute. Once the bots had cut down the beefcake, they joined her in punishing Alphonse. He dropped after just a few volleys, and she crouched to examine his body. Why he was considered dangerous enough for extreme force, she couldn’t fathom, but now that he was taken care of, she could call it in.
Rebecca sat on the edge of the police station roof, frowning thoughtfully as she counted her bounty payment.
I don’t know who Robot Menace is, but the police thought I was her. I’m going to have to find out more about her, so I know if I have to do anything to ensure she doesn’t ruin my reputation before I even get started in this world.
